The Flute Society of NSW is proud to present our Annual Gala Day! This will be a fun day filled with flute related events where you will get to meet fellow flute players, participate in small and large ensemble playing, a chance to learn and play a new piece written for large flute ensemble by our committee member Sarah Broughton, and this year, we will also be doing a demonstration on the Chinese flute ‘Dizi’! At the end of the day, our Gala Day Concert will take place where you will get to perform the pieces you learnt with new and old friends and listen to performances by last year’s Eisteddfod winners!

We will be joined by Flutes & Flutists, Flute Tree, Syrinx Music and Fluteworthy who will all be there to display their incredible range of flutes for you to try and sheet music to browse through!

French salons were a melting pot of intellectuals as well as artists. Poulenc had his own salon which Marie Curie attended. Omega Ensemble’s creators (David Rowden – Clarinet, Maria Raspopova – Piano) perform Poulenc’s Flute and Clarinet Sonatas and other works from the Parisian salons with Omega’s flautist, Sally Walker. The concert premieres a new work by composer Gerard Nicholls.

Wonderland

European and Australian masterworks in chamber music for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, percussion and piano, including Rachmaninoff’s piano trio “Élégiaque” and the whimsical new “Lobster Tales and Turtle Soup” based on Alice in Wonderland, by Sydney composer Holly Harrison.

Hourglass, Sydney’s favourite international chamber music export, brings all kinds of people together. Audience meet music makers, gaining the feeling of being inside the music. Classics of Romantic ear repertory appear with new commissions, and composers mix instrumentalists in unusual, beguiling combinations.

Featured are three stunning recent works – Harrison’s rock-jazz vamp with devilish drumkit solos, built on text of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”; Ball’s tour around the world, appropriating rhythmic traditions from old-school delta blues, to Korean Jangdan music, and Afro-Cuban clave; and lastly, Nikolai Kapustin’s flighty and bluesy trio for flute, cello and piano.

Before his departure to continue his flute studies in Paris, Brian Kim holds his last recital in Sydney (for now!) at the Sydney Conservatorium Recital Hall East. The first Newcastle performance of “Bach in the Dark”, run by Cellist/Music Educator, Rachel Scott. Scott’s witty and compassionate anecdotes of bringing music to indigenous and remote communities through the Australian Children’s Music Foundation accompanies the transcendental listening experience of J.S. Bach, his family and admirers in intense darkness.

“Contrasts”

Over 80 doctors and medical students from throughout NSW will perform under the baton of Dr David Banney in their annual Musicus Medicus fundraiser. This year’s concert offers an afternoon of sublime music, varied and contrasting in style and origin, with compositions from France, Russia, Mexico and Australia. The highlight will be the Sydney premiere performance of Elena Kats-Chernin’s Flute Concerto “Night and Now”, written especially for soloist and distinguished flautist Sally Walker.

All concert proceeds will fund the NSW Drs Orchestra Sydney Eisteddfod Instrumental Scholarship, and benefit Australian Children’s Music Foundatoin (ACMF), founded by Don Spencer, to help ACMF to continue to provide free music education and instruments to disadvantaged children and youth at risk throughout Australia

About the performers:

Mark Xiao has won numerous competitions and awards throughout Australia including the Leslie Barklamb Scholarships, the 3MBS Young Performer of the Year Award and the Australian Youth Classical Music Competition. In 2006, he was the winner of the Open Flute Competition at the Australian Flute Festival. Internationally, Mark was the recipient of the British Flute Society Award, the Zangger-Weber Stiftung and in 2012, he received the Third Prize and the Audience Prize at the August-Everding Music Competition in Munich, Germany.

At the age of 14, Mark was awarded a Licentiate Diploma with Distinction, making him the youngest flutist in Australia to have received the honour. He has since studied with such masters such as Virginia Taylor, Vernon Hill, Trevor Wye, Matthias Ziegler and Andrea Lieberknecht, accumulating a Bachelor of Music degree and three Master of Music degrees specialising in Performance, Soloist and Contemporary Music.

Mark was a guest member of the Tonhalle-Orchestra Zurich and has collaborated with several notable composers including Helmut Lachenmann, Beat Furrer, William Blank and Heinz Holliger; and conductors such as Kent Nagano, Lionel Bringuier, Roland Kluttig, Zsolt Nagy, David Zinman, Werner Ehrhardt, Douglas Boyd and Nello Santi. As a soloist, Mark has performed with the Bach Collegium München and the Filharmonie Hradec Králové.

Mark is now teaching and performing in Australia and is the National Sales Manager for Flutes & Flutists Pty Limited.

Tomomi Matsuo has been awarded several prizes throughout Japan both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, including the Gold Prize in the 26th All Japan Ensemble Contest and the 3rd Prize at the 58th Student Music Competition of Japan in Osaka. She has also been awarded prizes at the 19th Music Competition of Kanagawa in Japan and the 9th Biwako International Flute Competition.

Tomomi received her Bachelor of Arts degree at the prestigious Tokyo University of the Arts followed by a two-year residential course at Trevor Wye’s Flute Studio in the UK. She has two Master of Music degrees, specialising in Orchestral Performance and Soloist from the Zurich University of the Arts where she studied with Matthias Ziegler. She was also Professor Ziegler’s assistant teacher during her time there.

Tomomi is a regular assistant performer at Trevor Wye’s lectures in the UK, USA and Japan and in September 2011, she began performing with the Senzoku-gakuen New Philharmonic Orchestra. Tomomi has also been invited as a guest performer at the National Flute Association Convention, the British Flute Society Festival and the Australian Flute Festival. More recently, Tomomi has had several performances with the Philharmonia Zurich. Tomomi has collaborated with many world-renowned conductors including Kazuki Yamada, Nelo Santi, Fabio Luisi, Alain Altinoglu and Jun Marrkl and in 2015, she had the opportunity to collaborate with Toshio Hosokawa as a soloist for his work, Voyage V.

In 2017, Tomomi moved to Sydney and is teaching and performing regularly around Australia.

Kate Mostert is an up and coming young oboist from Sydney. She is currently in her fourth year of a Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying under Alexandre Oguey.

Kate has performed as principal oboe of the Sydney Youth Orchestra, Sydney Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra and Wind Symphony, as well as the 2016 Australian International Symphony Orchestra Institute. This year, she was appointed principal cor anglais of the Australian Youth Orchestra and was selected to participate in AYO’s exclusive fellowship program with Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Kate also performs regularly with her award winning chamber ensemble, Quintet Vivo, and was recently awarded the Sydney Conservatorium Association Scholarship Award for an outstanding young woodwind player.

Alan Hicks is a graduate of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. He was appointed Junior Fellow in Accompaniment at the RNCM in 1992 and subsequently joined the staff as Accompanist and Tutor in Piano.

In the course of eight years as a freelance pianist in London, Alan appeared at major recital venues including the Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room and St John’s Smith Square. His CD recording with Kate Romano, 20th Century Music from the British Isles for clarinet and piano, was BBC Music Magazine’s Chamber Music Pick of the Month (Metier MSV CD92013). As pianist with the King Piano Trio he worked on Lord Menuhin’s Live Music Now! concert scheme and appeared at the 2000 Three Choirs Festival in Hereford. Alan was pianist with the London-based Australian contemporary music group the Bennelong Ensemble, appearing live on BBC Radio 3, at the Cheltenham Festival, and in concert tours of Italy and the UK.

Since his return to Australia, Alan has been appointed Vocal Coach and Accompanist at the ANU School of Music and was Assistant Musical Director, Repetiteur and Language Coach for their 2005 production of Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. He continues to be in demand as a recital partner for national and international instrumentalists and vocalists.

Live at Lunch presents Yo Sebastian! a tribute to the beloved works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Artistic Director Jane Rutter, Chevalière des Arts et Lettres, together with Willoughby Symphony Soloists, perform J.S. Bach favourites including the gorgeous Brandenburg Concerto No.4 in G major BWV 1049 for Two Flutes, Solo Violin, Continuo & Strings, and ‘Air On a G-string’ from Suite in D major BWV 1068.

Recognised as a major lunchtime musical event, the 2018 Live at Lunch Season will include mesmerising Gregorian Chant to Romantic Masterpieces by Schumann, Schubert and Brahms, exciting new Indian Arabic and Chinese-inspired World Chamber music, works by exiled WWII Composers, an homage to the Unsent ‘Love Letters’ of Erik Satie and a feast of Sacred Songs including ‘Ave Maria’s by different composers.

Ephemera Trio: a musical exploration of celestial landscapes such as pulsars, craters, planetary atmospheres, stars, sun and void. Merging the sound worlds of jazz and contemporary classical, and set to real space sounds, it is an original sonic experience. The ensemble is led by Keyna Wilkins (piano/flute/compositions) with Elsen Price (double bass/loop pedal) and Will Gilbert (trumpet) and includes freely improvised pieces. . Formed in 2015, this trio have had a series of successful shows around Sydney including being featured in the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival 2017.

“RIVER SONGS” presented by

The Hourglass Ensemble

“The river has physical presence, deriving identity from water, currents, tides, light, mangroves, birds, ferries, people. It carries connotations of life itself, the miraculous continuity of time and generations.” - Betty Beath

The Hourglass Ensemble premieres two Australian commissions and reinvents well known local chamber works and song cycles, featuring soprano with flute, clarinet, violin, harp, and piano. A beguiling combination of instruments, rarely heard together, brings you into a sound world of unique combinations and enchanting stories. Hourglass is preparing for their third European tour, exporting native compositions to new global audiences again in 2018, in Poland, Germany, Denmark, and England.

Sensual, cool, and crystalline, “River Songs” portrays cities built around rivers and oceans, and the way those living there have connection, history, and belonging with water.

Meanwhile, in the sparkling Australian rainforest, the stunning “Lyrebird in my Piano” shows us the wizardry of our famous native bird, combining Bartok and Satie, Debussy and Ligeti, or Reich and Takemitsu, via the imagination of Brisbane composer Richard Grantham.

The program is packed with more Australian music - there is feisty sky dancing in Ball’s “Enemies of Gravity”, and novel nocturnal jazz musings in Lemon’s “Tangent Blues”. Finally, modern pumped up groves in Brophy's bass clarinet work, NRG.

The Hourglass Ensemble is a Sydney-based group of elite chamber musicians and soloists whose mission is to enjoy playing the best music with the best performers at the highest level, and to draw in an audience with a large range of experience with contemporary music to understand new artistic worlds.  Their unique expertise is in blending new and unusual combinations of woodwind, with strings, voice, percussion, piano, actors and designers, exploring timbral possibilities of familiar groupings, focusing on commissioning, premiering and recording Australian composers, and exporting works from their homeland to the world.  

The group returned from a highly successful debut tour of Poland, Switzerland, Germany and Austria in 2017, and are about to release their first two EPs. They’ll return to Europe and add North America to their audience in 2018.

Hourglass was born in 2015 from the manifesto of artistic director Andrew Kennedy– to play new and recent music that an audience will be able to enjoy and understand on first hearing, to deformalise the concert experience to make it less abstract and threatening, and to give the uninitiated listener an explicit guide to accessing the art music world.  Following that philosophy, the group has explored a diverse repertoire from unaccompanied solo pieces to well-loved late Romantic pieces, to re-imagined twentieth-century classics, to brand new chamber opera and Australian-themed song cycles.
